Something else happened on a certain 4th of July…

Yaron Schwartz 6 July 2002

On July 4, 1976, Israeli commandos secretly flew thousands of miles to Uganda and heroically raided its airport at Entebbe, rescuing the almost 200 Israeli and Jewish passengers of Air France's infamous flight hijacked by Palestinian and German terrorists.

"Operation Thunderbolt", which later came to be known as "Operation Jonathan", lit the world's imagination and left it in awe of Israel's daring military initiative. All of the terrorists, as well as tens of Ugandan troops were killed, and the dictator Idi Amin's air force was blown to smithereens on the ground.

Sadly, the operation's commander, Lt. Col. Jonathan Netanyahu, was killed as he led his troops into the airport's terminal- the only IDF casualty in the entire operation.

The military feat at Entebbe showed the world that Israel will go to the ends of the Earth and will spare no effort and the means at its disposal, to save the lives of Israelis and Jews- that the phrase "Never Again" is not said in vain.

It is indeed symbolic that the operation was carried out on the 4th of July- the Independence Day of the nation that is the contemporary beacon of freedom, democracy, human rights and civil liberties.

The State of Israel's sum and substance is to be just that for the Jewish people and all the citizens of Israel. Remarkably, it is doing so in spite of the unimaginable challenges is faces every day since its inception 50 some years, and especially in the past 2 years, as the Al-Aqsa Intifada constitutes the latest manifestation of the Palestinian Arabs' aim to terrorize Israeli into defeat.

For a number of years during the last decade of the previous century, it seemed to many that Israel had "gone soft"- that the people were exhausted by decades of seemingly endless conventional wars and terrorism and were desperate for a way out of their predicament- any way out.

Much of the fateful decisions made by Israel's leaders in those years, although arguably spawned by good intentions, were feeding off this ostensible national "mood" and were the result of political blindness, naive view of reality, false promises from leaders within and utter lies unflinchingly uttered by the Palestinians.

Many innocent Israeli victims of terror paid a heavy price for this mistake- this folly that is the Oslo Process and the malaise it brought to the Israeli nation, mostly on the moral level.

Things have changed in the past year or so, and it seems Israel has regained its tenacity of old and its inspiring stance against terrorism it was once revered for.

On the 4th of July, let us remember the great feat of "Operation Jonathan" and all the noble values it stands for and let us support both Israel and the United States of America in the war against the scourge of terrorism.
