POWELL, THE PACIFIST
Emanuel A. Winston, Middle East Analyst & Commentator (18.4.2001)
Let us try this headline: "WASHINGTON HIT BY MORTAR SHELLS LAUNCHED BY TERRORISTS!" Subhead: "Bush-Powell urge restraint and, on advise from other world leaders, enter into negotiations, pledging not to use "excessive force". The New York Times and CNN congratulate Bush and Powell on their wisdom. Funerals for Americans hit by the mortars will not be shown - nor will the photos of maimed children. Terrorists will be interviewed so they may explain their cause and complain that any attack to silence their mortars is unfair.
Let's get this very straight!
Secretary of State General Colin Powell (following the elder Bush and former Secretary of State Jim Baker’s advise) has castigated Israel for using "excessive force" against more than 100 Palestinian mortar attacks into Israel. Hold onto that word: "excessive"!
Remember that it was Powell who insisted that the U.S. employ overwhelming force to attack Saddam Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War "Desert Storm". This was after Powell pushed for continued sanctions on Iraq to be implemented instead of using U.S. forces. He then dragged his feet for six months getting ready. During this six month foot dragging, Saddam's troops were raping, murdering and plundering Kuwait's citizens.
It was Powell who maintained that only overwhelming force would minimize American casualties. This was readily agreed to by Bush, Sr. and Baker, particularly since they had been previously arming Saddam, in addition to negotiating for oil privileges in Iraq.
Recall that it was Bush, Sr. who issued a waiver (otherwise called a 'pardon' before indictment) for his entire cabinet for any "business" in which they had been engaged with Saddam up to the day Saddam moved his troops to grab Kuwait.
Recall also that it was Secretary of State Baker’s State Department who instructed Ambassadress April Glaspie to tell Saddam that, "we [America] were not interested in his "border claims". In effect, a "Green Light" to take Kuwait, her oil and her gold bullion. That would have paid for Saddam’s $60 Billion dollar debt to Russia and other Western allies from his 8 year war against Iran. This war was to be allowed to continue, according to the Bush-Baker plans.
There were no hearings by Congress to question Bush and Baker for arming Saddam or for giving (at least) $5 Billion dollars to Saddam for arms (through the Agriculture Department). Nor was General Colin Powell questioned about his role in the 'foot-dragging' six months delay utilized to preserve Saddam's regime.
What unmitigated gall for a passive, mis-titled "Desert Warrior" to say to Israel: "Ignore the mortars and the killing of your people. Listen to me! Do not harm Arafat’s Palestinians! Do not respond to his vicious attacks! Do as I would do: appease the enemy! Do not use overwhelming force! Follow my example in the Gulf War. DO NOT WIN in this war your enemies have carried to your civilians! Do not destroy Arafat - just as I, General Colin Powell did not destroy Saddam (following instructions by Bush, Sr. and Baker and now Bush, Jr.)
Regrettably, Prime Minister of Israel General Ariel Sharon seems to have listened to these nice pacifists and withdrawn from the point in Gaza from which the mortar shells were being fired on Israeli communities.
It is clear that Colin Powell should have been assigned perhaps to Bosnia, as an American Ambassador to soothe an area seething with multi-ethnic and religious hatred. Clearly, he does represent a State Department deeply tied to Arab oil influence and has the heart of a pacifist and not a warrior. There are times when the heart and soul of a warrior must be present when their society is threatened by primitive killers.
Powell, speaking for the U.S. State Department (whose policies, officials and bureaucrats have ranged from merely hostile to the State of Israel to downright anti-Semitic) and the pro-Arab James Baker faction is clearly a weak voice in the name of any democracy. He, like Madeleine Albright before him, represents the hand-wringing apologists whenever it becomes necessary to strongly face dictatorships, terrorist or tyrannical regimes like Syria, China, North Korea, Iraq, Iran or merely terrorists like Arafat.
Powell was never a true General but a man of token passivity not even prepared to defend any democracy. I agree, Colin Powell is a nice guy but certainly not a defender of democratic societies.
Israel should politely tell Powell and Bush, Sr., along with Baker’s pro-Arab oil friends to button their lips.
There are some simple facts which Powell and the decidedly anti-Semitic State Department know:
*One: The Arabs cannot be placated.
*Two: There is an underlying war of religion which, in the short term, is directed against Israel but in the long term, it will attack Christianity and Christian nations.
*Three: The Arabs are a primitive people who enjoy the carnage of war because it confirms their manhood when they win.
*Four: Islam, as interpreted today is a dangerous movement that will one day attack the West with the same catastrophic weapons of mass destruction sold to them by West,
*Five: There are Jews who would destroy the State of Israel if they could not de-Judaize it to meet their desire to assimilate.
*Six: The U.S. State Department is the gathering place for those who hate the Jewish State and wish it destroyed.
*Seven: There is absolutely nothing the Jews can do to placate or appease either the Arabs or the Christian nations of Europe.
*Eight: In their greed for money and oil, the West, including and especially America, has sold the radical Islamic fundamentalist Arab nations the weapons and technology to destroy the cities of the West, They have done this for money but their emotional motivation is still driven by the taught hatred of the Jews and the Jewish State of Israel.
*Nine: The Arabs, from the days of Ishmael through Mohammed have hated their Jewish half-brothers and tried to destroy them.
*Ten: Both Islam and the Catholic Church led by the Pope, as well as the subsequent Christian factions (except for those true to their bible teachings) wish to eliminate the Jewish people and lay claim to G-d's Covenant with the Jewish people. Both believe that this is a battlefield where only one will remain to present their claim to be Number One.
As for Powell, he is a nice, weak man in a uniform who simply should not be listened to. Like Ehud Barak, he is a false warrior dedicated to appeasement. Israel must defend herself in the best way she knows how and NOT listen to hypocritical advisors who have a vested financial interest to please the Arabs.
