| THE PRICE OF APPEASING TERROR Ophir Falk, Tel Aviv 17 Nov 2001 1. The outbreak of WWII was a direct result of the European Appeasement policy of the late 30’s, which sought to pacify Hitler, in fear of a new war in Europe, by rewarding him for his aggressiveness. The failure to stand by liberty’s cause before the war brought not only humiliation in the form of the 1938 Munich Agreement, but also war itself. 2. Similarly, the West’s folly of attempting to appease terrorists and their patrons- PLO, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hizballah, Iran, Iraq, Syria and Libya- proved to be a sharp-edged boomerang. Until the early 90’s, the US and Israel led the West’s policy of not negotiating with terrorists. They rightly ostracized and took military actions against these and other organizations. That policy changed with the post-Gulf War appeasement that culminated in the form of the 1993 Oslo Accords. 3. The post-WWII political picture was an unknown, yet Churchill and Roosevelt both knew that the only way for Freedom to Triumph was to insist on the UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER of the Axis Powers. 4. Similarly, in the wake of the recent horrific attacks on the US, the civilized world- spearheaded by the United States and its allies, such as Israel- must staunchly fight to eradicate those who perpetrate and harbor terrorism and demand the UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER of Fundamentalist Islamic Terror. 5. The WORLD MUST RISE TO THE CHALLENGE and curtail this barbaric strand of violence before these extremist elements have unconventional weapons’ capability.
